Campaign and ad group lifecycle

Understand campaign and ad group lifecycle states, interactions, and launch requirements.

Campaign and ad group status sequence

Campaigns and ad groups move through a shared lifecycle, but the readiness rules are different for each object type. Use this view to understand what each status means at a glance.

Campaign

Campaign lifecycle

Campaigns move from draft to scheduled, then into live delivery, pause, and completion.

Draft
Creation request is successful and a campaign ID is returned.
Scheduled
At least one ad group is scheduled.
Live
Campaign begins delivering impressions on the start date.
Paused
Campaign is paused by a user.
Completed
Campaign reaches its end date.
Ad group

Ad group lifecycle

Ad groups also move from draft to scheduled, but can become live independently of the parent campaign as long as launch requirements are met.

Draft
Creation request is successful and an ad group ID is returned.
Scheduled
Requirements to launch the ad group have been met.
Live
Ad group begins serving on the start date.
Paused
Ad group is paused by a user.
Completed
Ad group reaches its end date.
Key difference: A campaign can be ready to launch when at least one ad group is scheduled, while an ad group becomes ready to launch once its own launch requirements are met.

Campaign and ad group status interactions

The below details how ad group and campaign status workflows interact with each other.

Campaign vs. ad group readiness

What has to be ready before an ad can serve

Use this view to understand which configuration belongs at the campaign level, which belongs at the ad group level, and what must be in place before an ad group can go live.

Campaign readiness

Campaign-level configuration

Campaigns provide the top-level structure for delivery. They define the objective, inventory type, and optional budget and scheduling framework used by downstream ad groups.

1
Objective is defined at campaign creation. Measuement item sets are also associated at this level.
2
Budget, schedule, and delivery settings can be configured at either the campaign level or the ad group level.
3
Campaign-level date and delivery choices set the framework for downstream ad groups.
Ad group readiness

Ad-group-level launch requirements

Ad groups contain the targeting, bidding, and creative configuration that ultimately determines whether ads can serve.

1
Objective must be defined in the campaign.
2
Budget must be defined at either the campaign or ad group level.
3
Bid must be defined on the ad group.
4
Schedule must be defined at either the campaign or ad group level.
5
A targeting tactic and corresponding targeting inputs must be configured.
6
At least one approved creative must be associated before the ad group can begin serving.
Campaign

Set the top-level campaign structure and the configuration that should remain anchored at the campaign level.

Ad group

Complete the bid, targeting, schedule, and creative association that make the ad group eligible to serve.

Key difference: Campaign-level setup defines the structure, while ad-group-level setup determines whether the ad can actually go live.
