Account access and permissions

Understand advertiser authorization, API access types, and permissions across workflows.

Overview

Before partners can use Walmart Connect Display APIs, they must be authorized to access one or more advertiser accounts.

Access to Walmart Connect Display APIs varies based on:

  • The Display solution e.g. Onsite Display or Walmart DSP
  • The workflows your integration supports
  • The advertiser accounts you are authorized to access
  • The permissions granted by those advertisers

This guide explains:

  • How advertiser access works
  • How access differs between Onsite Display and Walmart DSP / Offsite Display
  • Which access type applies to your workflows
  • How permissions affect API capabilities
  • How to validate existing account access

How access works

Display API access is controlled by advertiser authorization.

In most cases, advertisers explicitly grant access to technology partners and agencies through Walmart Connect Ad Center. The permissions granted determine which APIs and workflows are available to the partner.

✅

Advertiser isn't sure how to grant API access?

Advertisers can use this help guide to learn more about access management, where admins manage their organization's hierarchy including adding, editing or removing users from accounts, reviewing access requests, and granting API access to partners.

1. Identify your solution

Determine whether you need Onsite Display, Offsite Display, or both.

2. Select workflows

Determine whether you need campaign management, reporting, creative workflows, or a combination.

3. Request access

Obtain advertiser authorization through Ad Center or Case Management.

4. Validate permissions

Confirm advertiser visibility and permission levels.

5. Begin implementation

Start building campaign, reporting, audience, or creative workflows.

Determine your access requirements

Access is determined by what solution you are integrating with and what workflows you need to support.

Onsite Display

Supports campaign management, reporting, creative, audience, and targeting workflows.

Offsite Display (Walmart DSP)

Supports reporting and measurement workflows for authorized advertiser accounts.

Next question: what do you need to do?

  • Campaign Management — create, update, and optimize campaigns and ad groups (in addition to item set, association, and audience workflows that support these activities).
  • Reporting — retrieve performance and operational reporting
  • Creative — build, preview, and submit creative workflows

Access by solution

Onsite Display access

Onsite Display advertiser accounts support advertiser-managed access through Walmart Connect Ad Center.

Technology partners and agencies can be granted access directly by advertiser account administrators.

Typical use cases include:

  • Campaign management
  • Audience workflows
  • Creative workflows
  • Reporting workflows

Onsite Display access methods

Organization TypeAccess Method
Technology PartnerAdvertiser grants access in Walmart Connect Ad Center
AgencyAdvertiser grants access in Walmart Connect Ad Center

Onsite Display supported access types

  • Campaign Management
  • Reporting
  • Creative

Offsite Display / Walmart DSP access

Walmart DSP advertiser accounts use a separate access process.

API access for Walmart DSP accounts cannot be granted through Walmart Connect Ad Center.

To obtain access:

  1. Work with the advertiser account administrator to complete the required DSP access form.
  2. Submit the completed form through Case Management.
  3. Wait for authorization approval before beginning DSP reporting workflows.

Important

Walmart DSP access requires advertiser authorization and may require additional approval steps beyond those used for Onsite Display advertiser accounts.

Offsite Display supported access types

  • Reporting

Helpful resources

Access types

Partners may be granted one or more API access types depending on their integration scope.

Campaign Management

Best for campaign management platforms and optimization tools.

Supports:

  • Campaign creation
  • Campaign updates
  • Ad group creation and management
  • Targeting workflows
  • Audience creation workflows
  • Item set management workflows
  • Recommendations/optimization tools
  • Creative association
Reporting

Creative

Best for creative workflow and asset management platforms.

Supports:

  • Asset and folder management
  • Creative creation

  • Creative moderation

Permission overview

Permissions determine which API workflows are available after access has been granted.

❗️

Permission mismatch

If an advertiser grants reporting-only access, campaign management and creative endpoints will return authorization errors.

Always align requested permissions with the workflows your integration supports.

Campaign Management Access

  • Campaign APIs
  • Ad Group APIs
  • Targeting workflows
  • Audience workflows

Reporting Access

  • Performance Snapshots
  • Entity Snapshots
  • Stats API
  • Measurement workflows

Creative Access

  • Assets
  • Creative APIs
  • Preview APIs
  • Moderation workflows

Common access scenarios

I only need reporting

Request:

  • Reporting access

Common use cases:

  • Dashboards
  • Reporting exports
  • Performance analytics
  • Measurement workflows

📌

Creative partner looking for creative performance data?

If your integration focuses on creative workflows but also requires creative-level performance reporting, advertisers can grant Reporting access in addition to Creative access.

Reporting permissions provide access to Snapshot Reporting APIs and creative performance metrics without requiring campaign management permissions.

Validating existing account access

After access has been granted, partners should validate that advertiser accounts are visible and permissions align with their intended workflows.

While the Display API does not provide a dedicated advertiser attributes endpoint, partners can use the Sponsored Products Advertiser Attributes v2 endpoint to retrieve advertiser attribute snapshots for authorized advertiser accounts.

Use this process to:

  • Confirm advertiser visibility
  • Validate onboarding completion
  • Confirm account authorization
  • Troubleshoot access issues

1. Authenticate

Validate that credentials and headers are working correctly.

2. Retrieve advertiser data

Confirm advertiser visibility using advertiser attribute snapshots.

3. Validate permissions

Confirm that granted permissions align with supported workflows.

4. Test endpoints

Validate campaign, reporting, or creative endpoints before implementation.

Common access issues

IssuePotential Cause
Authorization errors when calling campaign endpointsReporting-only access granted
Advertiser account not visibleAdvertiser has not granted access
Missing creative permissionsCreative access type not enabled
DSP reporting unavailableAdditional DSP authorization requirements not completed
Access request still pendingAuthorization process not completed

What happens next

After access is confirmed:

  1. Configure authentication
  2. Validate sandbox connectivity
  3. Confirm advertiser visibility
  4. Test supported workflows
  5. Begin implementation
